about us

The future is folk. Bal Folk

What is balfolk? Balfolk connects people, generations and nationalities, and is a dance meeting/party where people dance to folk music just for the pleasure of dancing. We don’t perform on stage and we don’t wear special folk costumes – we simply dance for fun and along the way we build an extraordinary community.

This movement was initiated in France, and over time it grew, developing and drawing on the traditions of various countries – including Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Romania, Hungary and even Poland. It is becoming more and more popular throughout Europe, as evidenced by numerous new events and a constantly growing number of participants.

The variety of dancing is huge – we dance in pairs, threes, fours, circles, lines and all other arrangements you could imagine, and sometimes even solo. Everyone will find something for themselves.

Regular Thursday’s Practise

We are an open group where everyone is welcome. You don’t need a partner, we teach everything on-site, and we don’t require any dancing experience, just a willingness to dance, a positive attitude and comfortable shoes. Unlike dance schools, there is no obligation for continuity or weekly attendance (but we encourage it anyway). We meet regularly every Thursday from 8 p.m. at ul. Saint Filipa 13 in Krakow (5 minutes walk from the Main Railway Station:)). We start each meeting with a workshop (a different dance is explained each week), then we smoothly move on to practice.

What is so special about us?

Thursday’s Ballfolk Practice is not only about dancing! We like to talk and support each other, we care about a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, and judgment is prohibited. Sometimes someone wants to talk over a cup of tea about a flooded bathroom or other worries or share their joy and there is always someone who will listen and provide support. Sometimes (we really like such “accidents”) we bake or buy too much of something sweet, then we deal with this problem together in the kitchen 🙂 So our Thursday Balfolk Practices are meetings during which you can both dance and talk, we are a bit like ” Support group”. If it’s still hard for you to imagine what balfolk is, it would be best if you came and saw for yourself who we are, what a nice and open community we create and how easily you can become a part of it 🙂
